The Fitties

Dune Bungalow   Oils on canvas board  5 x 7 inches  SOLD

This is another of my Humberston Fitties series.  A simple sketch of a bungalow there snuggled beneath the sand dunes which border the coastline.  The little path at the side of the building leads up the dune to give a splendid view of the beach and sea.

Different ways of seeing

Triple Aspect    Oils on board   8 x 8 inches  SOLD

Several years ago I became interested in seeing the landscape differently, in shapes and colour rather than as the real objects.  My painting freed up considerably and I enjoyed sculpting the oils with the brush to create imaginary places.  This image can be viewed from all directions to reveal a possible coastline, sky or land mass.

Warmer days

Meadow Medley   Oils on canvas board  6 x 6 inches  SOLD

This little picture has packed its bag and set off to a new home in New York USA.
A reminder of summer days, gentle breeze and sunshine in wild flower meadows.

Old and new

Early spring, west corner   Oils over acrylic on heavy card  5 x 7 inches

I really enjoy coming across an old painting in my studio, spending half an hour applying some transparent washes and creating something new from old.

The view is across the wheat field near my home, early spring, weather dodgy, lots of stormy showers.  The textured sky and the abstracted shapes make it interesting to paint so here it is...ready to face the world with its make-up on.

Over land and sea

Blue Horizons     Oils on box canvas  12 x 12 inches

This painting began its journey with an under-painting vigorously scrubbed onto the canvas to form shapes and tone.  I destroyed parts of this later to tease out a composition which reminds me of the coast and surrounding landscape.  Keeping a limited palette adds to this theme.

Colour and Form

Little Blue Pot      Oils on box canvas, unframed   12 x 12 inches

I love to sculpt the paint with a brush into shapes reminiscent of cliffs, rocks and rivers.   A blend of abstract and figurative and part of a series of paintings about land and sea.

Shapes and sizes

Formations, land and sea   Oils on box canvas  12 x 12 inches

Observing shapes, sizes and colours in the landscape, I like to make abstracted images.  These paintings evoke memories of first seen delights.  This painting is on box canvas, painted around the sides and unframed.  May be hung as it is or placed in a float frame.

All lined up...

At the edge   Oils on board  6 x 8 inches

I was very impressed with this line of birches all standing to attention for me to paint.  The light on the bark inspired me and the dry grasses looked like tufts of blond hair.  Whisby Nature Park lakeside.  A quick tonal study.

Eremus and Folly   Oils on canvas board  6 x 6 inches

This is one of my favourites.  The stately flowers of the Eremurus rise elegantly beside the columns of the Folly.  The gardens are beautiful...a mix of formal and informal.

All is calm

Birch Grove   oils on canvas  8 x 8 inches  SOLD

A friend came for afternoon tea yesterday and took this little painting away with her.  I shall miss these birches as I only finished it the day before.  It has gone to a good home though.

I will take a fresh look at this stand of trees another day without the snow.

Daisy May    Oils on canvas board  4 x 4 inches

I was really challenged by this little flower.  After several wipe-overs and fresh starts I was getting near abandoning the poor thing.  I decided to abstract it a little and not be too precious about getting everything correct.  A little 'roughing up' and darkening the background produced this little sketch.  It is growing on me.

Relax. it's Sunday

Please be seated   Oils on canvas board  4 x 4 inches  SOLD

A little sketch which actually took me ages!
Painting small really is a challenge especially with large brushes.
I try not to use a small brush to avoid tightening up.  Fun to paint though.

Walled gardens

Pumpkin Duo    Oils on canvas board  8 x 8 inches

Walled gardens are so appealing to me.  I think they are a world of their own, enclosed and quiet with interesting fruits, flowers and vegetables, often heritage varieties.  Gunby Hall in Lincolnshire was where I saw these two pumpkins nestling amongst their leaves.

Happy Valentine's Day

Heart of the matter   Oils on canvas board  4 x 4 inches  SOLD

When I was a child, mother used to tell me not to wear my heart on my sleeve.  This little flower is quite happy to show itself to the world.

Summer holiday

Side view   Oils on canvas board  6 x 6 inches

My favourite place again...Humberston Fitties.
I love these little wooden bungalows nestling behind the sand dunes on the coast.

Haymaking time

On a roll  Oils on canvas board  5 x 7 inches

I love to see these big round hay bales up in the Wolds.
They are not there long before the transporter comes to cart them off to pastures new.
I can imagine these two feeling left out and planning to roll down the hill.

Pep talk.

Sneaking in.    I always love the sight of poppies in a field as if they are trespassing.  These lovelies are in a field of oilseed rape and add a little pop to the otherwise mass of yellow.

The painting came together quite quickly and I resisted being too tidy with it.  I like the relaxed feel to the brush strokes and the composition of triangles.

Big skies.

Go West   Oils on canvas board  5 x 7 inches

Lincolnshire is blessed with huge skies and spectacular sunsets.  The road from the coast was a memorable occasion.

Just for you

Be my Valentine   Oils on board  4 x 4 inches  £ 20    SOLD

This little sketch is the first of my florals.  I am not usually a flower painter but I rather liked the way these two are snuggling up.

Wandering through   Oils on board  8 x 8 inches

The second in my abstract postings.  I love placing colour and shapes to form a composition.  No initial plan...I paint until it looks right.

...and for a change

In between   Oils on board  8 x 8 inches  £ 30

Painting abstracts is something I really enjoy.  I try not to get stuck in one way of painting so changing from reality to imaginative keeps me from stagnating and being repetitive.

I begin with an underpainting to create the first stage of the work, briskly sculpting the transparent paint with a brush and scrubbing in the basic shapes.  When the paint is dry the next stage is partially  destroying the first painting and blocking in with colour to create a new image  .  A 'fictional' landscape.

Don't miss this wonderful exhibition of paintings and craft

Summer memory

Two's Company      Oils on canvas board  12 x 10 inches

Up on the Lincolnshire Wolds these big bales stand like sentries after harvest.

Tuesday, 3 February 2015

I usually try to finish my daily paintings in one session but I have 4 paintings drying off before I can cut in around some of the shapes.  Today I am posting two of these and hope to post again in a day or two with the finished work.  These will be placed for sale on the Daily Paintworks website.

This one is Walcott Fen in Lincolnshire.  It measures 12 x 10 inches  Oils on canvas board

The second painting is from a photo of Dore, near Sheffield.  A few inches of snow causing morning problems.  School is closed.

Morning mayhem.  Oils on canvas board  12 x 10 inches

More on these tomorrow.

Shining light.

Hidden rays   Oils on canvas board  5 x 7 inches  SOLD

Wandering around our wildlife garden I came across these Ligularia flowers nestling amongst leaves and garden debris.  The light was falling on their petals...a hidden gem.
