All square.

Cliff View    Oils on canvas board  6 x 6 inches

An empty beach with nothing to spoil the view.  A square format for this seascape as I wanted to give more room to the sky.  The pink peach glow gives a calm and serene feeling.

Stand to attention.

Coastal Homes   Oils on canvas board   5 x 7 inches   GIFTED

A day out in April to the Lincolnshire coast with whippet and a picnic.  Little beach homes stand pertly on the dunes.  The beach and dunes were quiet today for our walk as the tide was coming in.

Gilt Edge, Yorkshire   Oils on canvas board   5 x 7 inches

A golden moment captured by brave strokes of a loaded brush.  Loosely painting an impression of sunlight on land and sea I wanted to create a 'sense of place'.

Sometimes there are golden moments when a painting comes together quite quickly and this one was gilt-edged.  It said quite firmly "step away Anne" so I obeyed.  I am pleased I did...I like it.

Copper touch.

Burnished Glow   Oils on canvas board   5 x 7 inches   SOLD

Painting light is a favourite subject and seascapes lend themselves in a spectacular way.

Loosely applying the oils to blend and form an abstracted image I sculpted the land mass and ebbing tide with one brush from start to finish.  Using a half inch size brush on a 5 x 7 support is a good way of preventing tightening up.  Fussing is prohibited.

Stone Roses.

Rocks and Roses   Oils on canvas board  6 x 6 inches   SOLD

Roses tumble down these rock walls in Belsay Quarry Garden.  Delights surprise the visitor round every corner.  I have painted this scene several times and each time I remember the day we visited this magical place.

Sun and Shade.

Birch Garden   Oils on canvas board  7 x 5 inches   SOLD

Our wildlife garden has many native trees which make shady places to contrast with the grassy areas.  A corner of this lawn is bounded by Birch trees.  I like their silvery textured bark on the trunks.  Flowers and plants jostle together to give a relaxed feel to the place.

Birthday Treat.

Sun and Shade   Oils on canvas board  7 x 5 inches

In 2002 we went to Cornwall for a week to celebrate my birthday.  We took our family and rented a cottage near the coast.  On 13th September we went to Fowey for the day.  This surprise view up a little street was a painter's dream and I quickly took a photo before the sun moved off the white houses.  I painted this on a larger canvas when we returned home and it has been a favourite of mine.

This new little study was fun to paint and re-visit the scene which first attracted me.

Autumn Glow

Autumn Border   Oils on canvas board  7 x 5 inches

Painting a study of autumn in the middle of June might be a little premature and almost wishing my time away.   However, I grab the moments of inspiration and when I was looking through some of my photos I found this one of part of our garden that I took last year.  The orange colour against the greens popped out at me and I was tempted to do a quick oil sketch.  Simple brush strokes show the jumble of plants relaxing in the sun.

Morning light

Morning   Oils on board  23 x 37 inches  SOLD

Cliff top view of the bay.  My loose impression of early morning light on the Yorkshire coastline.

Great Garden

Great Arch, Belsay Quarry   Oils on canvas board  8 x 8 inches

An awesome garden in Northumberland.  This great arch is impressive, softened by the ferns, flowers and exotic plants.  A magical place.

Full Flow.

Mossy Glen   Oils on canvas board   7 x 5 inches

We found this little gap in the rocks to watch the water cascading down, tumbling about the mossy rocks and stones.  Betws y Coed in North Wales.

Reighton Sands   Oils on canvas board   5 x 7 inches   SOLD

Peace and quiet on the sands.  My impression of this Yorkshire coastline.

Passing Clouds   Oils on board   5 x 5 inches   SOLD

A little study of clouds and light on the water.  An impression of sunset.

Peach Glow

Up Early   Oils on canvas board  7 x 5 inches

A pink glow on this impression of the coast.  I like the calm still feeling in this little study.

I painted this on two occasions...the main part first and the next day when the oils had dried I added the grasses on the cliff top with a few quick brush strokes.  Not too many to avoid a fussy look.

Sunstreak   Oils on board   5 x 5 inches

A tiny study of the River Till at Broxholme.  I was interested in the streak of sunlight on the distant field.

Dune Relic    Oil sketch on board   8 x 6 inches   SOLD

Old sculptural relics along the coast.  These gnarled old timbers have the dunes for company.

Beyond Reality

Hidden Shore   Oils on board  26 x 34 cms   SOLD

This painting is re-worked from another seascape.  I used vigorous brush strokes to create an imaginary shore.   A study in textural shapes, light and a limited colour palette.

Sundown   Oils on canvas   5 x 7 inches

I like the warmth in this little sketch.  Just a few simple brush strokes to give an impression of sunset over the shore.

Bands of colour.

Up and Down    Oils on board  5 x 5 inches

A second sketch study with more detail showing rocks, reflections and rising sun.   Early morning on the coast when all is calm and quiet.  A reference for a larger piece of work.

Sea study.

Come and See    Oils on board  5 x 5 inches  SOLD

I like sketching in paint...as an exercise in drawing skills and also making a reference for a larger picture.  This piece is showing sky, slack tide and shore.  The marks made by the brush add to the texture.

Old Barn   Oils on canvas board   5 x 7 inches   SOLD

I love this little painting.   A visit to an Elizabethan Hall and Garden last month is when I saw this little barn quietly relaxing in retirement.  It was in the field behind the main gardens.  I have no idea how old it might be but I imagine it would have an interesting story to tell.

The light coming through the broken wood panels attracted me at first and I love all things rusty and crumbling.  A perfect subject for me to paint. I used broad brush strokes to stay loose and spontaneous.

Faded Glory   Oils on canvas board  5 x 7 inches   GIFTED

A few months ago I took a photograph of a bouquet of flowers sent to me.  It was a very colourful flower arrangement and I thought of painting it like that.  Out of interest I changed the photo to black and white.

I began the painting using ultramarine blue and burnt sienna to make a dark colour but as it evolved I added a little permanent rose and raw sienna.  Titanium white helped to adjust the values.   I abstracted the shapes as I didn't want to render the picture too closely to the photo.

I like the faded, sepia type image and it has inspired me to try changing a few more photos to see how they would make a painting.

A quiet day.

Haven Pond   Oils on canvas board  6 x 6 inches   SOLD

A day in late spring for a walk with friends near Benniworth in the Lincolnshire Wolds.

Fantasy field.

West Field   Oils on board   10 x 10 inches

I planted a whole field with imaginary flowers...maybe lupins or borage?  It was great fun and quite a change from the green of the wheat which is currently growing there.

Night draws in.

Last Light   Oils on stretched canvas  12 x 12 inches   SOLD

The moments before the sun drops behind the cliffs and night draws in.  A red-orange glow in the sky colours the bay.  An abstracted study of Robin Hood's Bay in Yorkshire.

                                        My interpretation of nature's paintbox.

Flamborough Head   Oils on canvas  4.5 x 6.5 inches

Another view of the cliffs and bay at Flamborough.
This little study is on stretched canvas and comes with a wooden easel.

Fair of face.

On a fair day     Oils on stretched canvas    6.5 x 4.5 inches

The cliffs at Flamborough Head in Yorkshire are home to nesting birds at breeding time.  On the grass atop the chalk there are butterflies and wild flowers.  I remember a holiday there with my daughter 25 years ago when we cycled 85 miles to the campsite.  Special memories.   This little canvas comes with its own wooden easel.

Summer gifts.

Please don't pick the daisies   Oils on canvas board  8 x 8 inches   ON HOLD

For all to enjoy, summer wild flowers are a gift from nature.  I think this is a happy painting.

Tidal Flow..

In and Out   Oils on stretched canvas   12 x 12 inches   SOLD

Tidal flow is the subject of this re-worked abstract picture.  Rescued from near ashes it lives to tell another tale for the third time.     A study of sea, beach and shore abstracted to form another way of interpreting nature.

The life of a painting....  Some of my paintings reach 'maturity' quickly; others need a few tweaks to adjust their looks.  But a few go through a series of major changes.  Even then I might not be happy with the outcome and the only answer is the bonfire.

In and Out has escaped to face the world in a different form.  The photos below show its journey...

'Simply Sun'   The first painting.  Oils on canvas.

'All is done'    The second one with several changes

'In and Out'   (Third and final painting)  Oils on stretched canvas  12 x 12 inches
